VISIT TO THE VET - PART 3

Thurs 26th Feb 2009

Another visit to the vet for Max today - how, like that!?

No choice, really - this morning, he looked real sick after vomitting all he ate. So, it was a case of 'nothing going in, nothing coming out' . I had to make a special appointment for him to be examined by Dr. Jean Sim (who I knew will be able to treat him better than the other vet).

Brought Max in at 2.30 pm. Dr Sim and , thank goodness - Siew Lan, the assistant who handled Max when he was 1 month old appeared on the scene too. After examination, it was decided we had to get Max's 'Body in Motion'.........and so all four of us went into action. First, we clipped his nails - good thing too, as Max was scratching all over later......Then , one assistant held his front paws together, I held down his neck, Siew Lan held his back paws and at the same time started pressing his abdomen. Dr Sim went in with her gloved fingers and started digging - and , in that manner we harvested ten over nuggets..........all the time, with Max screaming his lung out.

I really appreciated the two ladies....they did a great job, really showing they cared - I know they felt for Max........he stayed with them for over a week when he was 'hospitalised' two years ago........So, lesson learned.- always get the right vet to treat your sick cat.

Now, the kitty has to go on a special ' prescription w/d diet' - from Hill's Pet Nutrition USA , one can a day , each can only $3.36 ! And the $ damage today? -

consultation - $25.00
medical treatment' - $30.00
injection - $10.00
special diet - 7 cans - $23.50
GST - $ 6.20

Total - $94.70

Dance Session @ Hillview Green

Wed. 25th Feb 2009

Our Special Teach Session tonight at Hillview Green Clubhouse attracted a full house - many arriving there before us - we had to say sorry for being late, as we had to fight the traffic, coming all the way from the city. And so, it was decided that next Wednesday's Special Teach Session will start at 6.30 pm instead of 6.00 pm.

We shared 3 new dances - 'Breakin Dishes', 'Cowboy On The Run', and 'Love Me Tomorrow' and revised the 3 dances taught at last Saturday's 'Hoe-Down @ Hillview Green' - 'My Lady Soul', 'Cha Cha Conchita', 'My One Desire'. We had a great time, looking forward to doing it again next wednesday................

Once again, our thanks to danzbuddies Siok Im, Philip and Laraine for their help in arranging for us to use the Hillview Green function hall. Also, a big 'thank you' to Siok Im for cooking us the 'green bean' soup - it was good!

Visit To The Vet - Part 2

Sunday, 22nd Feb 2009

Our dear little Max wasn't making progress and so another trip to the vet became necessary this morning. The problem was a case of prolonged constipation - the reason for his not eating well and listlessness. That called for some serious treatment requiring minor surgical operation under G.A. He was left in the Animal Hospital for the morning for the operation and when we went to fetch him home, he was in a real daze. He seems to be recovering, but still look really dazed ........

And the $ damage? -

consultation $30.00
G.A. $50.00
Surgery $100.00
Medicine $30.00
GST $14.70

Grand Total $224.70

Hoe-Down @ Hillview Green

Sat, 21st Feb 2009

Our danzbuddies gathered tonight at the Hillview Green Clubhouse for a 4-hour long hoe-down - with plenty of linedancing and good food. Danzbuddies Siok Im and Philip, long-time residents of Hillview Green, kindly arranged for us to use the nice function room - a big air-conditioned hall with good decor, dance floor and lighting.

Many danzbuddies who were there for the first time were impressed with the facilities available - for many of us 'oldies', it was nostalgic and meeting here again brought back lots of memories - we had met there many a times during our early years......so, it was really a 'Blast from the Past' for us.

And as is usual at our jam sessions, the first order of the day was to see that the buffet table is set up right - what with so much food brought in by each and everyone. There were a variety of fried noodles, rice dishes, soon kueh, sandwiches, shepherd pie, hot and cold desert, fruits, cakes, mango pudding, etc.

My favourite was the salad dish from Soon Mee, gado gado from Ethel and custard tarts from Daphne - also favourites with many others; these were the first to get 'sold out'.......

Besides the good food, we also enjoyed many good line dances - in keeping with the 'Blast from the Past' theme we did some nice oldies - 'Stepping Back to Country', 'Pinaco Cha Cha', 'Turn Me Around' 'Any Dream Will Do', 'Man Without Love' and 'Visions'.
We shared the following four new dances - 1) Jennifer Choo's 'Cha Cha Conchita' , a great cha cha '8&1' dance which went well with everyone; 2) 'My One Desire' by Peter & Alison, good samba beat, also well appreciated; 3) 'My Lady Soul' by Karl-Harry Winson, an 'easy going' beginner dance, no problem there, looks promisng; 4) 'Departed' by Scott Schrank, nice music, but with too many turns, .....not so sure about this one.

Visit to the Vet

16th Feb. 2009

A visit to the Vet became necessary today. The 'baby' in the house - Max the cat, got a bit sick and this got the Dear Wife a bit worried.

He had a change of diet over the weekend and suffered a vomitting spell and then refused to eat anymore.........

became listless and just want to sleep....

So, off we went to see his 'doctor' , James Tan at Whitley Road who said there is nothing seriously wrong - just 'stomach upset'. Gave Max an injection, some medicne to take and charged us a total of $68.50!.........for:

consultation...........$30.00
injection..................$10.00
medicine.................$24.00
GST.........................$ 4.50

medicine given were:
- bactrim (antibiotics)
- lactobacillus (to aid digestion)
- B12 (appetiser)
- metolon (to stop vomitting)

So, how come a sick cat's visit to the vet is so much more costly than a normal visit to the doctor for us humans..................?!

danzbuddies in the news - THE BEAT (New Zealand LD Magazine)

17th Feb 2009

Just received my copy of 'The Beat' from New Zealand and saw the article on our recent activities on page 20.

It's good publicity for us - already we have been contacted a couple of times by New Zealand line dance groups and enjoyed hosting them when they paid us a visit recently.
We can look forward to more Kiwi line dancers visiting us in future......

Danzbuddies Valentines's Day Party

14th Feb. 2009

This year's danzbuddies Valentine's Day Party was held at Pek Kio Community Centre because our regular home venue - Tanglin CC was still undergoing renovation. The Pek Kio Hall's capacity was slightly reduced and we could only cater to a maximum 100 participants.

The crowd came dressed to the nines and it was heartening to see many danzbuddies bringing their hubbies to this Valentine's Day event. Each couple were presented with flowers, chocolates and ushered to their candle-lit tables - all so romantic!

Deejay K C kicked off the night with our signature 'merengue circle' dance to the theme song - 'Love Is In The Air'. By now, danzbuddies are familiar with this fun dance routine as we used it during our recent Christmas, New Year Eve as well as Lunar New Year parties. The circle dance always brings out the laughs and is a great ice-breaker.

At 6.30 pm, Ms Alice Siew, Chairperson of Tanglin CC WEC, the host for the evening , gave her Welcome speech in which she thanked her hard-working Organising Committee members.

Special thanks went to Rosemary Ang for her help in preparing many of the danzbuddies for the various dances featured at the party.

And they danced, yes how they danced......

Everybody loved the Cha Cha Cha as well as the OB Cha Cha....

and the Rock N Roll, Disco Rock and Jive

they loved the waltz as well as the twist

the samba, rhumba and even the paso doble...........

All joined in doing the macarena ......

and they enjoyed the buffet dinner.....

There was plenty of excitement during the 'couples' beer-drinking' contest....

Everyone seems so absorbed in playing the games and taking part in the contests...

Alas, we had to end the party at 10.00 pm and it was hard getting people off the dance floor

Goldhill Gardening Club in the News!

Feb.14
The Goldhill Gardening Club and its Community Garden project received prominent coverage in the Straits Times 'life' home & garden section on February 14th.

A lot of hard work had gone into the Goldhill NC's Community in Bloom project - turning a plot of unused state land into a Community Garden. It took a lot of lobbying through Moulmein CCC to get the Singapore Land Authority to grant us the approval to use state land for such a project - we are the first ever such community garden on state land in a private housing estate.

The Gardening Club was set up in June 2008 by 50 members in Goldhill Gardens and neighbouring estates. We got the TOL in November and the Garden was officially launched by our Member of Parliament RADM (NS) Lui Tuck Yew on 9th November.

In the 3 months since the club got going the empty plot of land had been transformed into a nice community garden featuring rows of vegetables, herb and spice plants, fruit trees and ornamental flowering plants.

The Community Garden is now a focal point for residents to get together in the mornings and evenings to enjoy gardening activities and to socialise with neighbours.

Makan Buddies File

Friday Feb. 13

Danzbuddies at our Feb 13th jam session were treated to Lay Kuan's (aka Mrs Lim) very own 'Mango Tango' pudding. Through the last few months, she had perfected her recipe for this wonderful pudding and this time, they even came in nice individual packaging. We were all saying how nice of her to take the trouble to pack them so nicely.

It turned out that LK had done them like that for a 'Charity Sale' at Queensway Secondary School earlier that day. Whatever it was, thanks for thinking of us - we all enjoyed many helpings of the 'Mango Tango' pudding.

Also enjoyed by the danzbuddies was our favourite apple pie - many of you asked about where it came from. Here's the bakery's name and address.

Bread Connection Bakery
Block 45 Owen Road, #01-297
Tel: 6296 2123
(it's next to Cambridge Road Market at Pek Kio)

The apple pie used to cost $6.00 - its now $7.50. The Bakery also offers blueberry pies and does very good chocolate and cuppucino mousse cakes.

Also enjoyed at the jam were some nice new dances - 'Issues', 'Moonlight Kiss', 'Boyfriend of the Year' and 'One Sweet Day'. The 'blast from the past' dance was 'Hot Love', well liked by all, as always.

Chap Goh Mei Dinner at the Istana

Mon, 9th Feb 2009

It was time again for the annual CNY gathering of grassroot volunteers and their respective Members of Parliament at the Istana and this year it happens to fall on Chap Goh Mei, Feb 9th.

As usual, had to catch the shuttle bus from IRAS, was there at 6.30 pm, went through security screening and boarded the bus which got us to the Istana lawn at 7.00 pm. Under the Big Tent which was put up to accomodate the 1000 over diners, we moved around a bit to say hello to those we know - it was good to see Low Peng Kiat (from Yew Tee Constituency) whom I worked with in Hong Kah in the 80's....and also Vincent, our old neighbour.......and it was nice to see Mr Khaw Boon Wan, our previous MP wandering up to say hello. One thing you can say about him - he always make it a point to come to our table to say "hi" every year.

8.00 pm sharp, the PM's arrival was announced, and food was served. Catering was by the Mandarin Hotel and we had lots to eat - chinese dishes, malay and indian dishes, the works.

9.00 pm, speech time and the PM was at it for 1 hour, ten minutes, talking to us on the economy and also giving us some interesting backgound information about what's going on and what will likely happen with our neighbouring countries, etc

10.20 pm , the national anthem was played, signalling the end of the party.

And the most asked question amongst us -"will we see the big E end of this year?...."

Makan Buddies File

Sunday, 8th Feb. 2009

Our Sunday danbuddies at today's jam session got to enjoy the hugely popular 'curry buns' brought to us by Doreen Wong from the old traditional Sin Hon Loong Bakery at No. 4 Whampoa Drive. They used to cost 50 cents but now are 60 cents each, but the size is still fairly big, so they're still good value for money. Thanks, Doreen!

We also had delicious 'chye tow kway' - the sinfully 'fried-in-black-sweet-sauce type' from Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre.

Also popular was the 'fu chok pak kor' desert served up by Bessie and Bernard - all gone in no time during 'recess time'...........

Besides sharing the new dances- 'Mama Said' and 'Summer in December' we also brought back some good oldies, including 'Pinaco Cha Cha', 'Sunshine Waltz', 'Mockingbird Waltz' and 'Open Arms'................all well liked by the danzbuddies.

Makan Buddies File

Friday, 6th Feb 2009

Participants at tonight's jam session were treated to a nice desert from Maggie Yong - her home-cooked 'pulut hitam', brought to us in her hot thermos pot which kept the 'pulut hitam' warm and nice....Everyone couldn't wait for 'recess time' to start getting their fill......

We also enjoyed a selection of 'tau sar piah' bought from my favorite traditional hokkien bakery - Poh Guan Cake House at Blk 531 Upper Cross Street #01-57. They came with different types of bean paste fillings - salted, sweet, and peppery. Also those with yam paste and winter melon paste (all at $0.70 each). Then there were the two different types of 'ang ko kueh' ($0.50 each) and delicious 'lo-por peang' ($0.70 each). All the different types of pastries proved popular and disappeared quickly.

While at the 'tau-sar piah' shop, I noticed a long queue at the bakery 2 shops away - had to go and check it out, so just joined the queue. It turned out that everyone was ordering Barcook Bakery's 'special raisin cheese bread'. So, I just followed the crowd and bought 4 pieces ($1.20 each) to try, and they were delicious - a good find.

We shared 'Summer in December', new dance from Rep Ghazali - an easy 32-count dance which was well liked by all. Other new dances on the playlist were 'Mama Said', 'Shopping' and 'Hot'.

Favourite oldies featured tonight included 'I Said I Love You', 'Begin The Beguine' and 'Moonlight Coaster'.

Feb. 4th

Last night's class had a great treat - brought to us by danzbuddy Belinda Lim who show-cased two of her favourite dishes - Glutinous Rice and Ngoh Hiang . Both dishes were greatly appreciated by everyone in the class and I just have to record this, so that in future, we do not miss out on these dishes for our 'makan sessions'......

Sunday Danzbuddies celebrate LNY

Sunday, Feb. 1st, '09

After the l o n g two-week break, our Sunday danzbuddies couldn't wait to get together again. Everyone turned up in their Chinese New Year best and we took our traditional Chinese New Year group photo - it's good to see what happens from year to year, new members joined, old members lost, etc.
All came in a celebratory mood and everyone seem to have brought some goodies to share - we run out of space for all the food presented. As usual, we disciplined ourselves and had to warm up and do some serious line dancing first before attacking the buffet.

We brought back a couple of oldies - 'pasadena' and 'no tengo dinero' to start off the session. Both these dances went well with the group - good golden oldies never fail to bring satisfaction to our Sunday danzbuddies.

Time came for 'recess' and members wasted no time tucking into the various dishes on offer - the delicious 'nyonya mee-siam' served up by Auntie Nancy proved to be a hit and was the first to be 'sold out'.

Now, they only want to 'makan' - getting everyone back onto the dance floor was no easy task.

Our 'gong xi, gong xi' circle dance finally did the trick and soon every one was joyously dancing and wishing each other 'gong xi, gong xi, gong xi ni!' .

Our 'gong xi' dance had evolved from our 'auld lange syne' dance choreographed for our Count Down Party. It's a nice happy dance - always gets everyone onto the dance floor, excited and laughing away.
